Coaches' Association & Groundsmen's Association

Herefordshire CA

The Herefordshire Cricket Board Coaches Association was relaunched in 2009 following a Club Coaches & Volunteers Day in September 2008.

The HCBCA supports the development needs of all coaches - but especially club coaches - throughout the county.

For aspiring coaches this is through Coach Education courses and for existing coaches through regular ECB training development workshops.

The HCBCA's first annual Conference and Coaching Workshop was attended by Steve Rhodes and Henry Pryor.

Steve Rhodes, Director of Cricket at Worcestershire County Cricket Club made his Test debut in 1995. He was named one of Wisden's Cricketer's of the Year in 1994. Steve ran an informative, interactive and well-attended session which was very well received.

Henry Pryor invented a programmable bowling machine called "Merlyn", which claimed it could "bowl any ball known to man." Merlyn received much public attention when it was used by the English cricket team in the run-up to and during the 2005 Ashes series.

Crucially, the machine was claimed to be able to emulate Shane Warne's leg breaks and the England batsmen consider their ability to play spin bowling significantly improved through using Merlyn.

One of the more unnerving aspects of the machine is that it provides no indication of the type of ball it is about to bowl until the ball has left the machine. This forces batsmen to work on their instinctive batting, rather than trying to second guess the bowler.

Coaches present thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to pitch their wits against the machine!

For more information about the HCBCA please contact Therese Warwick on 07866 702205.

Currently membership is £20 p.a.

For an application form, please contact the HCBCA's Secretary, Marie Ferreira, on 01432 268835 or email her: ferreiras1@tiscali.co.uk.

The HCBCA has its own website where you will find dates of upcoming Coach Education courses and workshops:
